WEEK 12:
The Importance of Using Games in EFL Classrooms
The implementation of games into language teaching and learning is highly crucial. A study by Gozcu & Caganaga (2016) entitled “The Importance of Using Games in EFL Classrooms” aimed to find out how games are important and effective when used in EFL classrooms. The study found that games provide an atmosphere for EFL learners in which there are fun, motivation, and high learning performance.
When fun element is applied in language learning, the students will be more excited to learn the targeted language. Normally, students are able to learn well in a fun-learning environment. Games usually come with another package, which is goal setting. A positive competition among students, be it individual play or groups will be created once the students have something to achieve (goal).
On the other hand, students will be highly motivated to learn languages when games are used as games can increase positive feelings and self-confidence among the students. Studying in a relaxed and stress-free environment will eventually decrease students’ anxiety. Some students will feel nervous when they have to study in an intense environment. This situation may affect their academic performance.
Finally, games are able to improve students’ learning performance. When they are engaged in a fun-learning environment, they will have fun without even noticing that they are actually in the process of learning the language. For example, in order to learn English pronunciation and improve fluency, teachers can introduce the “Tongue-twister” game to the students. While playing this game, students will feel happy and excited. At the same time, their pronunciation and fluency are improved.
