WEEK 4:
PPT SLIDES: 21st century skills and the English language
classroom
In this class, we learned about 21st
century skills and English language classroom. Generally, it is related to how
ICT is implemented in education and also its importance for 21st century
education. Based on eleven shifts mentioned in Malaysian Education Blueprint,
the usage of ICT is stated in the seventh shift which is leveraging ICT to
scale up quality learning across Malaysia. This means ICT is recognized as the
crucial element in education which can enhance the innovation, creativity,
critical thinking and problem solving among students in 21st century education.
Apart from that, ICT is also included in the new curriculum which is the KSSM
and KSSR.
One the current initiatives by the
government in regard to ICT usage is 1BestariNet. In this initiative, it
includes the implementation of virtual learning environments in schools. For
example, FROG VLE is used as an online teaching and learning platform for
teachers and students. Currently, the Google Classroom is used as an e-learning
platform after the FROG VLE since it has ended the contract.
Besides, we also learned about 21st
century literacy which comprises of five important elements which are strong
academic skills which involves the 3Rs (Reading, Writing, Arithmetic) and 4Cs
(Communication, Critical Thinking, Creativity, Collaboration), teamwork,
thinking, reasoning and proficiency in using technology. Furthermore, the 21st
century skills which comprises four important elements are also discussed in
class which are communication, critical thinking, creativity and collaboration.
In this matter, teachers must include all of these skills in their teaching
process along with the usage of ICT in order to enhance students’ performance.
Overall,
the usage of ICT is crucial as it can
prepare students to face the real environment of 21st century education. The
4Cs mentioned above are also important because students are not only taught to
excel in academic performance but also must be competent in every aspect in
order to prepare themselves for a real working environment in accordance with
the National Philosophy of Education which is to produce individuals who are intellectually,spiritually, emotionally and physically balanced and harmonious.
